Wellness Center Assistant

Purpose of the Position

The Wellness Assistant promotes active older adult lifestyles and the six dimensions of wellness. The Wellness Assistant assists with development, implementation, and operation of the Wellness Program. The Wellness Assistant will work closely with residents, staff, and participants in group and personal fitness and aquatic settings to ensure the safe attainment of wellness goals.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction and cooperation of the Director of Campus Wellness to provide residents and staff with wellness programming that meets their emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational needs.
  • Willing to accommodate a schedule that is flexible and based upon the needs of the department.
  • Provide a high level of customer service and develop caring relationships with residents which promote participation and attendance in weekly wellness programs.
  • Instruct a variety of land and aquatic exercise classes as appropriate for older adults.
  • Instruct residents and staff on proper exercise technique and equipment usage.
  • Must work with disabled and memory-impaired residents.
  • Model exemplary appearance and attitude of a health and fitness professional.
  • Enforce safety policies and monitor the use of the gym, fitness studio, aquatic center, and locker rooms.
  • Perform light housekeeping, cleaning, and sanitizing of fitness equipment.
  • Immediately report injury, maintenance requests, and other concerns to the supervisor.
  • Respond with first aid in an emergency.
  • Perform clerical tasks; often using computer and Microsoft Office software.
  • Attend staff meetings and continuing education as required.
  • Adhere to department and organizational policy and procedure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

The highly qualified candidate will have post-secondary education or degree and a minimum of one year experience in fitness, kinesiology, gerontology, physical therapy, or other health-related field. Certification and experience in personal training or group exercise instruction are strongly preferred. Experience working with older adults preferred. Must possess strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.

Certifications

CPR/First Aid certification required or must be obtained within a reasonable time of hire. Nationally recognized personal or group fitness instructor certification preferred or willing to obtain within a reasonable time of hire. Lifeguard certification preferred. Other desirable certifications may include senior fitness instructor, yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, dance, Rock Steady Boxing, or arthritis foundation.

Physical Demands

Should be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or 20 pounds frequently. Must be able to constantly lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and set up exercise equipment. May be required to assist residents with transfers.  Must be capable of leading exercise classes and demonstrating wellness center equipment. Audio and visual acuity are necessary to safely monitor the programs. Must be able to work on feet for long periods of time.
