Gangster in Our Midst: The Untold Story Betty Brandt Passick of Oakdale, Minnesota, grew up in the small town of Fairbank, Iowa (population 1,000), with the remarkable claim of hosting Alphonse Capone’s bookkeeper, Louie La Cava, for over 60 years. In 2017 she published the award-winning historical novel Gangster in Our Midst, Bookkeeper, Lieutenant, and Sometimes Hitman for Al Capone. The author will present a 60-minute program on this Iowa story at two venues on Monday, October 6th: Fort Dodge Public Library, 424 Central Ave. at noon; Union Public Library, 406 Commercial St. at 5:30 pm,The novel is based on research of every aspect of the Italian American’s life through newspaper accounts, FBI and police records, plus interviews with locals who knew the gangster best. Gangster in Our Midst won an Indie Book Award from Shelf Unbound book review magazine in the US, and the 2025 Editor's Choice Award of Literary Excellence from Reader’s House magazine in the UK. The author talk is free and open to the public. She has agreed to bring copies of her book to the presentation, and will sell and autograph them for those who seek an understanding of this award-winning Iowa story.
